  • Premier Courses
    For horse enthusiasts, it’s essential to understand the fundamentals of horse management. In each premier course, you get 10 hours of in-depth education in your choice of important equine topics including behavior and welfare, evaluation and selection, nutrition and more.
  • Short Courses
    In today’s busy world, we don’t always have time to take a 10-hour course. Now you don’t have to. We’ve taken the most popular parts of the premier courses and created short courses that take only 1 to 3 hours to complete. MHU’s short courses allow you to select from a variety of topics included in our premier courses, and fit them into your schedule.

Horse Nutrition

The Horse Nutrition course is based on the knowledge of equine experts at Michigan State University. You will discover a wealth of resources for learning about the many factors that contribute to the proper diet of a horse. Knowledge of horse nutrition and feeding management practices is necessary for all horse owners. A proper diet can lead to a healthier and better performing horse.

Horse Behavior and Welfare

The Horse Behavior and Welfare course is based on the knowledge of equine experts at Michigan State University and nationally recognized equine professionals. In this class, you’ll find a wealth of resources for learning about horse behavior. You’ll learn about equine welfare and how it relates to horse management. Horse enthusiasts of all levels can benefit from this course, whether you are a horse breeder, trainer, owner of one horse — or even if you don’t own a horse!

Trail Riding 101

Trail Riding 101 is an educational experience based on knowledge from equine experts at Michigan Sate University and nationally-recognized equine professionals. This course will help you select the right mount and equipment for the type of trail riding you want to pursue. In addition, you will learn more about feeding and conditioning the trail horse as well as first aid on the trail. The last unit of the course will take you step-by-step from leaving home to riding the trails.

Horse Selection and Evaluation

The Horse Selection and Evaluation course is based on the knowledge of equine experts at Michigan State University and nationally recognized equine professionals. In this course, you will discover a wealth of resources for learning about many factors that contribute to sound decisions when selecting a horse for a specific use. Horse ownership can be a rewarding experience, and selecting the right horse is the first step!

Uses, Breeds, and Identification of Horses

The short course Uses, Breeds and Identification of Horses offers learners an overview of the North American horses industry. The United States has, undoubtedly, the most diverse equine industry in the world. While the U.S. has many unique breeds like the American Quarter Horse, Tennessee Walker and the American Saddlebred, the country is also a melting pot of many breeds from across the globe.

Purchasing and Owning a Horse 101

Owning a horse can be an awarding experience. Success depends on matching the right horse to owner, based on the prospective owner’s goals and equestrian ability. Once the match is made, both the fun and work begins! Horse ownership is a big responsibility, not just in relation to the size of the animal, but also in the amount of time and financial investment that is required in the day to day upkeep of an equine companion.

Evaluation Conformation: Form to Function

This short course will introduce you to the aspects of equine conformation that are essential for selecting a horse for performance or breeding.  In addition, common unsoundnesses and blemishes will be discussed.  During this course you will see clips from the My Horse University DVD Understanding Conformation Evaluation in Horses.  In addition, you will view the webcast entitled Conformation and Selection of Horses by Dr. Kathy Anderson. Throughout the course there will be activities to ensure that you understand critical points of equine conformation.
