Halter classes are placed on the following categories of conformation.

• Balance: The proportion of the horse's body parts and how they "fit" together.
• Structure: The shape and alignment of bones in the skeletal system.
• Muscling: The amount, shape and length of the skeletal muscle.
• Quality: The thinness of skin, smoothness of bone, and shininess of hair coat.
• Travel: The straightness of the footfall pattern, the length of stride, and the height and elevation of the knees and hocks.
