Welcome to e-Tips!

Welcome to the November e-Tips brought to you by My Horse University and eXtension/horses. The breeding season is fast approaching for those working towards a January or February foal for 2011. If you have had trouble in the past getting your mare bred, or you just want to learn more about breeding horses, register for the November 24th webcast “Why Won’t My Mare Get Pregnant?” by Dr. Kathy Anderson. Dr. Anderson teaches Equine Reproduction at the University of Nebraska. She and her husband, an equine veterinarian, have a farm where they breed and show Quarter Horses with their two children. Dr. Anderson has been one of our most popular webcast presenters, so you may want to take a look at her other webcasts in our webcast archives .

This Month's e-Tips

To increase your breeding success, follow these tips:

  • Evaluate mare and stallion fertility before the breeding season begins.
  • Tease mares every other day to detect estrus/heat.
  • Time breeding for 36 hours or less prior to ovulation.
  • Keep detailed breeding records for both the mare and the stallion.
  • Ensure broodmares are kept in a body condition score of at least 5 (moderate).
