Welcome to e-Tips!

Welcome to the December e-Tips brought to you by My Horse University and eXtension/horses. A trip to the feed store can be overwhelming if you walk down the supplement aisle. The choices are boundless, the manufacturer’s claims are miraculous, but the research supporting these claims is often unclear for many of today’s feed supplements. In this hard economic environment, horse owners need to be sure they are getting the most for their money when it comes to their horse’s feeding program. Dr. Carey Williams will help demystify supplements so that you can feed your horse cost effectively with confidence in the December 15th FREE webcast Nutritional Supplements for Horses. Dr. Williams will discuss a variety of supplements including vitamin and mineral, joint, calming and herbal. By the end of the webcast, you should have a much better understanding of when supplements might be beneficial, and how to use science based information to determine if your horse needs a feed supplement. Join us on Tuesday, December 15th at 7 PM EST for our FREE webcast produced through the partnership of My Horse University and eXtension/horses. Register now!

Vitamin and Mineral Supplements for Horses

Vitamin and Mineral Supplements for HorsesVitamins and minerals are often added to a grain mix to ensure it is balanced and meets a horse’s minimal nutritional requirements. A vitamin and mineral premix should be specific for the classification of horse. It is usually added to the grain mix and bound either with molasses in a textured feed or pelleted. The key to using vitamin and mineral supplements is to incorporate them to balance the diet and to avoid over-supplementation. Read on...

This Month's e-Tips

Over-supplementing vitamins and minerals is costly, and in some cases can be toxic to a horse. Remember these tips to ensure your horse’s diet has adequate vitamins and minerals:

  • Feed a balanced diet that is forage based.
  • Feed grain concentrates that have been formulated specifically to meet your horse’s nutrient requirements based on age, reproductive status and work activity.
  • Overfeeding vitamin and mineral supplements may create an imbalance in the amount of vitamins and minerals in your horse’s diet.
  • Remember: A horse receiving commercially-prepared concentrates (grain mixes) along with good quality forage typically will receive sufficient vitamins and minerals.
  • Analyze the nutrient content of the horse’s daily intake (including grain and forage) to determine if a horse is receiving an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals.
