Welcome to e-Tips!

Welcome to the April 2010 e-Tips brought to you by My Horse University and eXtension/horses. This month is the final webcast for our winter health series. Dr. Judy Marteniuk will present Equine Emergency First Aid on Tuesday April 20th at 7 pm EDT. Dr. Marteniuk will give you pointers to help you determine whether a certain situation is an emergency and how to handle common equine emergencies until the veterinarian arrives. Dr. Marteniuk is an eXtension HorseQuest expert and has answered many of your questions on HorseQuest's Ask an Expert. If you have a specific question about equine emergencies, become a Fan of My Horse University on Facebook and ask your question on the MHU Facebook page. We will make sure your question gets to Dr. Marteniuk before the webcast presentation.

Also, there is a great opportunity to get involved in genetic research that benefits the horse. The Equine Genetics research group at the University of Minnesota-College of Veterinary Medicine is collaborating with Drs. Ray Geor (Michigan State University) and Nicholas Frank (University of Tennessee) to investigate the disease occurrence and genetics of equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). The goal of this investigation is to better understand the role of breed, gender, age, environment (diet and exercise) and genetics in EMS. To learn more about the equine metabolic research project and how you can get involved, please visit: www.cvm.umn.edu/equinegenetics/EMS/home.html

Practice emergency procedures so that both you and your horse will be comfortable with them. It is also extremely useful to know your horse’s normal vital statistics so that you can recognize and report any abnormalities during an emergency. Read on.

Photo of the Month

Here is a picture of my mare, Mont, checking on her new-born filly, Serendipity, sleeping
in the hay. Mont is going blind and is injured, so Serendipity will be my next trail horse.
