Dr. Roger Becker

EXTENSION AGRONOMIST, WEED SCIENTIST, DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY AND PLANT GENETICS. UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

Biography

Dr. Roger Becker studies weed management strategies in annual and perennial systems in disturbed and undisturbed habitats.  Some of his current projects include management of purple loosestrife in wetlands; garlic mustard and buckthorn in woodlands; and Canada thistle in native prairies.  Also prairie establishment, weed management in forages and in processing vegetables, and the environmental impacts of herbicide and non-herbicide weed management systems.

Dr. Becker earned his B.S. in Agronomy, his M.S. in Botany-Plant Physiology,  and his Ph.D. in Agronomy-Crop Production and Physiology, all from Iowa State University, and is currently a professor at The University of Minnesota.

Dr. Becker has received numerous Honors and Awards including the following:

• Monsanto Achievement Award, 1983
• Monsanto Distinguished Development Award, 1986
• American Society of Agronomy Certificate of Excellence for the Development of Agronomic Educational Material in the Category of Publications: Alfalfa Management Guide, 1992
• Minnesota Association of Extension Agents Community and Natural Resources Section Programming Excellence in Natural Resources Award, 1993
• North Central Weed Science Society Distinguished Achievement in Education Award, 1997
• The Minnesota Integrated Weed Management Group sponsored University Extension Outstanding Service Award for 2004
