You Be The Judge - My Horse University Releases DVD on Conformation and Judging Arabian Halter

Horse owners, horse judges, and those involved in competitive horse judging events on both the youth and collegiate levels have a new learning tool, thanks to Michigan State University’s (MSU) My Horse University. Equine experts from Michigan State University Extension’s (MSUE) My Horse University launched the “Understanding Conformation Evaluation in Horses and Judging Arabian Halter” DVD for horse enthusiasts to learn about conformation and judging competitions.

Learning how the anatomy of the horse affects its performance will help you select an athletic horse – no matter what the breed. Viewers will learn how to judge Arabian Halter classes, including developing and delivering oral reasons, how to compare horses based on conformation and how the anatomy of a horse affects its performance.

DVD features:

  • A presentation by John Shelle, Michigan State University (MSU) professor of animal science, on Form to Function
  • Explanation of oral reasons by Christine Skelly, MSU professor of animal science
  • Official critique of the classes by national judge, John Lambert
  • Two Arabian halter classes with oral critiques
  • A sample of oral reasons for each class

Shelle and Skelly are both equine faculty at Michigan State University, one of the top three schools in the U.S. for equine science programs.

Shelle developed the MSU horse program in 1984, and is a member of the Equine Nutrition and Physiology Society and the National Horse Judging Team Coaches Association. He breeds national champion Arabian halter and performance horses and has coached and judged numerous national teams and competitions.

Skelly has served as an equine Extension specialist at MSU, developing and teaching horse management workshops targeted to horse owners and producers and working with regional leaders to promote the Michigan horse industry. She earned her Ph.D. in Equine Nutrition and Physiology at Texas A&M University.

My Horse University also offers online courses on breeding and selection, behavior and welfare, nutrition and more. My Horse University was created with busy horse enthusiasts in mind, offering self-paced courses that are developed by equine experts and science-based.
