Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) will be offering their students Michigan State University’s (MSU) My Horse University’s online course, Horse Behavior and Welfare, for credit.
The course will be offered this fall to Penn State’s undergraduate students. The Horse Behavior and Welfare course provides students with instruction on horse senses, horse body language, how a horse learns, key factors for the foundation of training, stereotypic behaviors, managing vices (stereotypic behaviors), the definition of horse welfare, and how to assess horse welfare.
“We are very excited about being able to offer MHU’s first online course to college students. It is privilege to collaborate with Penn State University and to serve their students,” says Dr. Christine Skelly, from MSU’s Department of Animal Science.
According to Dr. Camie Heleski, the lead instructor and animal behavioral scientist in MSU’s animal behavioral and welfare group, the course is designed to help students better understand how horses learn, why they react in various situations and how to use this information in handling and training.
The four-unit horse behavior and welfare online course is the first offering of “My Horse University,” a new educational program from Michigan State University (MSU) Global and MSU Horse Programs. The course is also available to horse enthusiasts worldwide.
